How might your social media presence impact your divorce?

Many adults spend time daily on social media, which can help them to stay connected with friends and family members. It can also provide them with an escape from reality. While that may seem harmless enough, there are times when your presence on social media can lead to problems.

One time when your activity on social media can make a big difference in your life is if you’re going through a divorce. It’s possible that things that you say and do on social media can make an already tense divorce even more challenging. Your ex may take posts, photos or messages out of context and use them in disputes over custody or property division.

How can you protect yourself on social media during your divorce?

For some people, the best way to protect themselves from social media during their divorce is to stay off of it. For those who don’t want to stay off social media, it’s best to remember that you have to consider how things may be perceived before you post them. Even a status that you think seems innocent, such as saying that you’re looking for a new vehicle, could be construed as you having poor judgment or that you’ve been hiding assets.

You should also remember that even privacy settings are not foolproof. It’s possible that mutual friends could screenshot what you say and pass that along to your ex. Because of this, you should still be incredibly cautious about what you share on social media, even if you think that you have your profiles locked down.

Every decision that you make during the divorce has the possibility of impacting your future. Remembering that the divorce will be over and that you’ll be able to resume your normal activities on social media may help you as you go through this. It’s also a good idea to have someone on your side who understands your situation so they can help you make logical decisions as you go through the process.
